Root Canals
Endodontics is the field of dentistry concerned with the biology and pathology of the nerves of the teeth. Root canals are probably the most widely known and most common procedure concerning endodontics. When your tooth becomes infected it usually means the nerves of the that tooth need to be removed. If left untreated this can cause serious problems which can lead to infection and can form into an abscess, this can lead to bone loss in the jaw and other major health issues.
Once given anesthesia, your root canal will no more painful than a regular dental procedure, such as a filling or getting a wisdom tooth removed. The dentist will then drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal. We will remove the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully clean and shape the inside of the root canal, then fill and seal the space with a sealant called gutta percha. You will then need to return to Love Smiles, where we will place a crown or other restoration on the tooth to protect and restore it to full function. There may be some soreness for the first few days after a root canal, but this is normal for most root canals. if over the counter medication does not seem to help, we may prescribe medication to relieve any pain afterwards. By saving your tooth you will almost immediately feel relief from the pain caused by the infection so you can continue to eat your favorite foods and maintain your overall health!
